El Rey Theatre
The El Rey Theatre Series consists of six paintings in different color variations, focusing on the theater itself, which opened in 1936 on Wilshire Boulevard as a Hollywood movie theater in the Miracle Mile district. I’m fascinated by its striking neon marquee and façade—a unique blend of Art Deco, Zigzag, and Streamline Moderne elements. The Miracle Mile neighborhood neon sign stands as a tribute to the original neon sign that once marked the eastern and western gateways of Wilshire Boulevard.
