ECHOES OF LOS ANGELES SIGNS

This series is about how Los Angeles talks to us through its signs. From the Hollywood sign to massive, rusty neon sign frames on L.A. rooftops, these signs are the heartbeat of the city—revealing its identity, glamour, and history. As I walked the streets of L.A. at night—my favorite time to explore, photograph, and paint—I discovered how these signs hum in the darkness, flash, and fall apart, telling a story of both glamour and decay. This series is about hearing and seeing the city's voice. Inspired by Art Deco from Hollywood’s Golden Era and my film industry career, I create paintings where the city’s past and present merge into visual stories.

Wilshire in the Rain, 2023 Acrylic painting with photo collage on canvas 36 x 24 in.

Wilshire in the Rain captures the stretch of Wilshire Boulevard that was renowned during the silent film era, when many Hollywood actors lived in its luxurious apartment buildings.

Created in an LA Noir style, the painting features a 1940s porcelain “Shotgun” street sign, a map from the same era, and historic neon signs atop the Bryson and Wilshire Royale buildings. It also includes the iconic Wilshire street lamp with its unique rectangular shape. Every major street in Los Angeles once had its own distinctively designed street lamps, many of which still remain throughout the city.

This piece is painted with acrylic on canvas and incorporates photo collage elements.
